Themueslior muesli is a mixture of cereals and nuts to be consumed for breakfast or during snacks. The muesli it can be eaten on its own but is usually consumed with yogurt, soy milk or cow's milk. Its consumption is more widespread among the countries of northern Europe.

That of the nutritionist Maximilian Bircher-Benner is considered theoriginal muesli recipe. The name Birchermüesli is reserved only for the dish containing the 4 basic ingredients: oat flakes, milk, lemon juice and grated apple, for the proportions we refer to the paragraph dedicated tooriginal muesli recipe.

As stated, it is not possible to speak of nutritional properties, calories or micronutrient intake because each blend has its own specific characteristics. We can talk about the benefits general related to the consumption of muesli.

With the introduction of muesli in the daily diet, it increases the fiber intake to meet the daily requirement. Its composition sees the use of soluble and insoluble fibers that help prevent glycemic peaks and decrease cholesterol levels. Muesli helps prevent constipation by improving the activity of the intestinal tract. It helps prevent the appearance of hemorrhoids, intestinal cancer and even heart disease.

Granola can be prepared with the most desperate ingredients: whole grains of all kinds, fresh fruit in pieces or grated (apples, grapes, berries, bananas, mangoes, lemon juice), dried fruit or nuts (raisins, ground walnuts, almonds and hazelnuts ...); many people also add the seeds and consume the mixture with dairy products such as yogurt and milk.

Muesli has a high satiating power and, consumed for breakfast, provides a good amount of energy, keeping you full until lunchtime. Seeds and nuts are rich in monounsaturated fats and omega 3 fatty acids which play a role in supporting cardiac activities.

Despite the numerous benefits just listed, you have to be careful with the quantities: a mixture of cereals and dried fruit bring mineral salts, vitamins, carbohydrates, proteins, lipids and fibers ... but it is advisable to consume from a third to a half cup of muesli per person to avoid a surplus of calories and sugars.

Original muesli recipe

There original muesli recipe proposed by nutritionist Maximilian Bircher-Benner was published in his health book, entitled "The Bircher - Benner health book". The muesli recipe includes the following ingredients for one person:

  • 1 tablespoon of oat flakes
  • 3 tablespoons of cold water
  • 1 tablespoon of lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon of condensed milk already sweetened
  • 200 grams of grated apple (including peel and seeds)
  • 1 tablespoon of hazelnuts or ground almonds

How is the muesli according to the original recipe?
Soak the tablespoon of oat flakes in 3 tablespoons of cold water. Add the lemon juice and condensed milk. Mix everything with the grated apple and sprinkle with the hazelnut (or almond) powder. To make the museli tastier, we recommend using hazelnut or toasted almonds.
