National Park of the Gulf of Orosei and Gennargentu: what to see
It is almost only for those who love nature, and also quite wild, the National Park of the Gulf of Orosei and Gennargentu, or for those who want to disconnect almost completely from the worldly life and the delirium of crowds near the sea to be in peace and get closer to the most authentic and little known territory of Sardinia. There are some monuments that deserve to be seen, and if you look, they are natural monuments: that of Perda 'and Liana, the Punta Goloritze and the beautiful source of Su Gologone.
Other opportunities for trips are the state-owned forests kept in National Park of the Gulf of Orosei and Gennargentu including those of Montarbu and Alase, but the one I recommend most of all is that of Montes; among the largest primary forests of holm oaks still present in Europe. Other points of interest to look for and immortalize to show friends that we didn't just swim and sprawl on the beach, are the Gorroppu gorge - chasm carved into the limestone by the waters of the Rio Flumineddu - and the village of Tiscali, enclosed in a karst sinkhole.
Needless to say, in the National Park of the Gulf of Orosei and Gennargentu there are many trails that are well marked by the Sardinian Forestry Authority and that branch off in surprising directions. Let's trust the official reports and venture out by choosing the one that best suits our mountain and walker propensity, in search of panoramic points.
The Urzulei Fennau path - San Giorgio path it can be traveled by motorcycle, on foot, on horseback or by bicycle and extends for a length of 11 kilometers, the one from Sedda ar Baccas in Gorroppu is for experts only, and is 12 kilometers long, while the Girgini T-700 it is full of refreshment points and can be taken both by off-road and by motorcycle, but also on foot, on horseback and by bicycle (6.7 km). The last one that I point out, but there are many others, is that of Gennargentu with which to arrive at Punta La Marmora also passing through rest areas and a mountain refuge (5.3 km).
National Park of the Gulf of Orosei and Gennargentu: flora and fauna
In addition to keeping fit and breathing fresh air, there is a reason to walk, indeed, there are many and they are partly made up of flora and partly of fauna. The flora even if less rich and luxuriant than centuries ago, it remained worthy of sweat and toil, even if only for the many interesting and often endemic plant species that we can meet step by step.
Let's start from the high altitudes, over 1,200 meters, the kingdom of grassy meadows if not of thyme meadows where the broom also comes out, giving us the opportunity to learn to distinguish its different species, including endemic ones: the broom Pantelleria, the broom of Corsica and the rare Moris broom. They also add to the flowery company the helichrysum, the santolina and other aromatic shrubs.
Towards 1000 meters we find the downy oak together with the Virgilian oak and the very rare congested oak but only further below the holm oak woods begin with some episodic strawberry trees that sprout with junipers and with the terebinth, for the rest they are pastures of bramble hedges and other shrubs and bushes. Only near the sea, we can hope to find mastic and carob.
The fauna of the National Park of the Gulf of Orosei and Gennargentu it is quite interesting and varied, especially for the many birds that we can admire, mourning some extinct animals such as the Sardinian deer and fallow deer, the monk vulture and the bearded vulture. Fortunately, the mouflon remains, the symbol of Sardinia. We return to high altitudes to tell about the golden eagles, the great imperial crows and the peregrine falcons to be enchanted by.
In National Park of the Gulf of Orosei and Gennargentu there is also the coral chough and near the cliffs overlooking the sea the Queen's falcon in colonies, while in the woods we can look for the great spotted woodpecker. There would be many others to name, but let's move on to mammals: among the most present predators there are the Sardinian wild cat, the marten, the weasel and the beautiful fox.
Obviously the boar which cannot be missing, as well as dormice. Amphibians and reptiles live serene and numerous in the National Park of the Gulf of Orosei and Gennargentu and we can count at least 10 endemics while in the waters of the streams of Park there is a very beautiful and typical trout of Sardinia, the macrostigma trout. A good Sardinian news: some of the last specimens of the Italian monk seal, one of the 10 most endangered mammals in the world, have been sighted in the Gulf of Orosei.
