Stramonium common, in scientific jargon Datura stramonium, is a plant belonging to the Solanaceae family and also makes flowers, at the same time it is highly poisonous. What makes it so is not the flowers but the high concentration of alkaloids of the most powerful, among which the wickedness stands out scopolamine.

Nothing is saved from this plant, when a toxicity, because the above alkaloids are present in all its parts, more in the seeds, but in any case nothing is saved. Bad by definition, therefore, it Stramonium has managed to conquer poison literary roles: its hallucinogenic properties are mentioned by Homer in the Odyssey and by Shakespeare in Romeo and Juliet and in Antony and Cleopatra.

Stramonio: origins

It is clear that this plant has ancient origins but still quite obscure. Even the indigenous people of the New and Old World knew it and it has always grown in sub-tropical regions and in temperate climates. Very widespread in America, Asia and Europe, in Italy in particular it is naturalized in all regions and is found in uncultivated fields, near ruins and on the edges of roads.

Stramonium: plant

The Stramonium is a herbaceous plant with an annual cycle, has a spindle-shaped tap root and an erect stem that branches out over and over again in the open air up to a height of two meters. It does not always reach it but we can expect it, if it is in the ideal climate.

The leaves are large and simple in shape, petiolate and with an oval lamina, the margin is indented and jagged. The flowers are also 10 cm long calyxes, solitary, at the end of the branch or at the bifurcations. The color of the Stramonium it is white, often enriched with pleasant purple hues.

The moment of flowering is that between July and October, then every day there is a small flowering in the flowering: the calyxes of Stramonium they remain closed during the day and then open completely at night. Always at night they give off an intense and penetrating smell, the nocturnal butterflies go crazy for it.

The fruit is less beautiful but has a particular shape: it is a sort of capsule, divided inside into four lodges that contain blackish seeds of about 3 mm. It is the size of a walnut but is covered with thorns, in fact it is trivially called thorny walnut.

Stramonium: effects

If they call it devil's weed and witches' weed, since the days of time, there is a reason, right? There is certainly: it Stramonium it has narcotic, sedative and hallucinogenic properties that in the past have been exploited both for "therapeutic purposes", very experimental, and for magical-spiritual rituals, by figures such as the shamans of many Indian tribes.

It is hallucinogenic alkaloids such as scopolamine and atropine that make this plant so toxic: despite many tribes having used it, it is extremely dangerous because the active dose of hallucinogenic alkaloids is very close to the toxic dose. So it is not easy to settle, in fact, I would say that trying to do it is a sort of Russian roulette.

Stamonium in homeopathy

From what has been said so far, it seems obvious that the homeopathic use of Stramonium it is extremely limited. It can be found proposed in ultra dilutions. These would be indicated for the treatment of convulsive phenomena, for neuroses accompanied by panic attacks and for hallucinatory phenomena with delirium. It's not a very common remedy and it's easy to see why.

In the past it was much more used, for example for suicides and murdersIn fact, it was excellent for causing paralysis of the respiratory muscles. There are also those who have tried to use the leaves for treat bronchial asthma, making cigarettes, obviously also containing other herbs, but this found has not been very successful. It created a strong addiction, more harmful than asthma itself.

When you wanted to get the right dose, centuries and centuries ago, you relied on self-experiment and for each bottle of Stramonium it was verified not to have exaggerated the doses. A good bet, but the belief was that the alkaloids as well as poisonous, were also euphoric, therefore effective in healing even the most severe depressive state.

Herbal medicine today names it Stramonium only as a natural remedy for bronchial asthma and to be taken only in the form of smokers and tinctures. There Tincture it is obtained by macerating the flowers and unripe fruits in alcohol.

Jimson weed and children

Among the subjects for which the Stramonium it is indicated that there are children in the front row, yesterday and today. Those particularly anxious, with an unfriendly mood and an attitude tending towards aggression. Even children, and adults, with a disturbed personality, hyperactive, or who show an attitude that suddenly alternates expansiveness and inferiority complexes.

Beyond age, it is Stramonium it could also be recommended for those who are hypersensitive, for those who are terrified of the dark and loneliness.
