Transplanting tomatoes: distance between the seedlings, period, ideal temperature, the influence of the moon, how to organize the furrows, fertilization and irrigation. All information on thetomato transplantand the care to be given to the plants.
When is tomato transplantation performed?
While tomato sowing continues in March, in April transplantation begins in the open field in Southern Italy and in greenhouses in the North and in areas with a harsh climate.
Thetransplanting tomatoesit can only come to life after careful digging of the soil and organic fertilization of the furrows that are preparing to accommodate the seedlings.
To improve the yield of cultivation it is preferable to perform thetransplantnot only after digging and preparing the furrows but also after having laid a layer of mulch. When it comes totomato cultivation, the most practical way to mulch the soil is to have dark bio-plastic sheets.
With the planting of tomato seedlings, the supports must also be installed, especially if you are growingtomatoeswhich develop in height like indeterminate growth varieties. To install the supports, you can implant solid stakes in the ground to be placed next to the plant. For indeterminate growth varieties of greater vigor, do not hesitate to choose stakes that protrude from the ground up to 250 cm! After the transplant irrigate with a modest amount of water.
Before transplanting tomatoes the soil must be hoed to remove the clods; subsequently it is useful to create grooves where transplant tomatoes. The grooves must be deepened about ten centimeters and at a distance of about one meter from each other.
To practice the grooves following a linear trajectory with 45 ° angles, you can help yourself by planting a string: plant two sticks, one at the beginning and one at the end of the space where you will make the groove. Make sure the two sticks are perfectly aligned before joining them with string. With the hoe, in tracing your 10 cm "channel", follow the course of the string, in this way you will be sure not to make mistakes.
The individual plants are placed in special holes made along the furrows. The holes must be drilled at a distance of 40 - 60 cm from each other using a planter.

If you do not have a drip irrigation system and are afraid that the jet of water may damage the newly planted seedlings, irrigate the soil first by letting water flow into every single hole. Enter thetomato seedlingsin the holes. The soil of the tomato plant to be transplanted must be perfectly aligned with the soil of the furrow.
The brace must be fixed near the plants.
In the case of mulching, the sheet should be placed just after the preparation of the furrows and just before the use of the planter.
How to grow tomatoes
- – Periodsowing in cellular containers / sowing in seedbeds: February / March.
- Sowing tomatoes and moon: sowing withmoon increasing (moon new).
- - Open field tomato transplant period: April in the south. May in the north. Transplantation can be anticipated both under small tunnels and in real greenhouses on a human scale.
- - Transplant of tomatoes and moon: the transplant must be done with a descending moon. Tamping is also done with a descending moon, always choosing the hottest days.
- - The transplanting of tomatoes in pots can be brought forward to March by placing the seedlings in shelter at first.
After the transplant, more tamping is needed, usually two or three are enough. The tomato is able to emit roots even above the collar, the roots emitted on the surface can be easily damaged by the sun's rays. The tamping consists in covering these roots by adding the soil taken between one row and the other. This allows for optimal root development. Following thetransplanting tomatoes, observe the basal part of the stem to notice when the plant emits these new roots and provide for the tamping.
